Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane declined to testify in a perjury trial against herFriday, and her lawyers rested their case without calling any witnesses.
“I listened to the Commonwealth’s case and I don’t believe it’s necessary for me to testify,” said Kane, claimingthe state hadn’t proved its case against her.
A criminal case brought against Kane alleges she leaked grand jury evidence to the Philadelphia Daily News, and then lied about it under oath. She’s facing charges for perjury, obstruction, official oppression and other offenses. The first-term attorney general is also accused of conspiring against former state prosecutorFrank Fina. She has claimed the perjury trial in Norristown is an act of vindication aftershe uncovered a series of inappropriate emails The jury will begin deliberations Mondayafter closing arguments.
Kane’s law license was stripped in September 2015; an appeal Kane filed in February for its reinstatement was denied. She will not be seeking reelection this fall.
