Around the 215: College rugby coming to town

The 2013 USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) is coming to PPL Park in Chester on June 1 and June 2. The tournament is the Big Dance of rugby, with a heavy dose of local flavor.

Six schools with Philadelphia ties – Penn, Temple, Delaware, Penn State, Saint Joseph’s, Kutztown – are in the field. In a press release for the event, organizers say “Philadelphia is quickly becoming the capital of rugby in the United States.”

One interesting side note is the participation of Maurice Clarett. The controversial former Ohio State football star has reportedly cleaned up his act and has turned to rugby. Clarett’s goal is to qualify for the U.S. national team and compete for a 2016 Olympic spot.

Reading knows how to promote

This one is a nice hike up the turnpike, but still worth noting.

The Reading Phillies have long been known for epic promotions. The Crazy Hot Dog Vendor is a staple, after all. This past weekend the Double-A affiliate had a daredevil named David “The Bullet” Smith load himself into a cannon, which launched him from the outfield to home plate.

Keep a lookout for these upcoming promotions at FirstEnergy Park (yes, these are real and they are spectacular):

June 1: Yo Pimp My Ride Clunker Car Giveaway

June 9: Fightin Phils Superhero Cape

June 10: 12th Annual Morning Game with Mike Schmidt’s Mustache Coffee Mug

June 20: 17th Annual Spam Carving Contest

July 1: Gluttony Night – all-you-can-eat at Concession Stands

There are plenty more, too. Head on over to the Reading Fightin Phils homepage.
