Brown confident after rough winter league

The biggest question looming at Phillies camp this spring remains in right field. It’s between uber-prospect Domonic Brown and veteran Ben Francisco. For all intents and purposes, it is Brown’s job to lose.

But the 23-year-old has a lot to prove after going just 2-for-29 in the Dominican Winter League. Last year, he hit .210 in 70 at-bats with the Phillies. Fans might be worried, but Brown certainly isn’t.

“I’m not a guy to make excuses,” Brown told reporters earlier this week. “I just went down there and played bad.”

Instead, Brown adjusted his swing by lowering his hands. He showed up at spring training early — he’s been in Clearwater, Fla., since before Christmas — and has been putting in extra time in the batting cage with hitting coach Greg Gross.

“I’m ready. … I’ll run through a wall right now. I’m ready, physically and mentally, to get it going,” Brown said.
