Chip Kelly: Open competition for Eagles QB position

Philadelphia Eagles Introduce Chip Kelly New Eagles coach Chip Kelly opened practice Tuesday.

Three’s not a crowd.

Chip Kelly held his first practice as Eagles head coach this week.

When he addressed the media, he made one thing clear: The quarterback competition is wide open. Kelly has Mike Vick, Nick Foles and Dennis Dixon on the roster. All three men are viable options to be the starter. The three players split the first-team reps evenly at the team’s first practice.

“It’s April 16 and we’re not playing until next September, so we’re going to use the full available time for us to make evaluations of who it is, and I think it fosters competition,” Kelly said. “I think those guys love competition, that’s why they’re in that position and they know it. Our guys really understand that. I think everybody right now knows where they stand, and that’s a big thing for us. There’s not a lot of grey area with this.”

The Eagles also released veteran backup quarterback Trent Edwards.
