City is opening its doors to Fashion’s Night Out

It’s not really surprising that Fashion’s Night Out has finally touched down in Philly. A night of shopping and sales that originated in New York, it’s just as much about the free swag as it is about fashion — and Philly loves a freebie, thank you very much. But what is surprising is that the city’s first venture into the FNO game attracted the attention of the Accessories Council, a national trade association for the accessories industry. Tomorrow night, they’re unveiling their USAMade campaign with a reception at Center City boutique Joan Shepp.

“We admire Joan’s store very much, we love the brands that are in her store, and I think there is an opportunity for designers who aren’t in Philadelphia already to introduce themselves,” says Accessories Council president Karen Giberson.

The cocktail reception will feature jewelry from the new initiative, which encourages designers to manufacture their products in the U.S. “Twenty five years ago, most fashion jewelry was made in the United States, and it kind of slipped away,” says Giberson. “But now, production overseas has gotten more expensive, and at the same time, quality expectations have gotten higher. When it comes to heavy metals and lead in jewelry, it seemed to make sense to start making jewelry in the United States again.”
