Contest: Name Philly’s Next Public Space

The University City District has announced a contest to name Philadelphia’s next public space.

The title for the area around 30th Street station, which will be renovated in a series of projects, is up for grabs.

Submissions, which can be sent to, are due by midnight on September 30 and must include the proposed name, an explanation and contact information. The winner will receive a $500 gift certificate from Amtrak.

PennDOT, along with a group of stakeholders including Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell, the Streets Department and Amtrak, is reclaiming the outer parking lane along Market Street as a 40-foot wide sidewalk.

The University City District expects the project, which will be completed by Labor Day weekend, will bolster efforts to create a landscaped public space with seating and seasonal greenery. The space will host activities such as music performances yoga classes, and holiday celebrations.
