Delaware State Police on Wednesday arrested a security officer employed by the Delaware Capitol Police for allegedly having sex with a female inmate inside a detention area of the New Castle County Courthouse, located at 500 N. King St. in Wilmington.

Police detectives said they instigated an investigation after they were contacted by the Capitol Police, who said a 22-year-old inmate in their custody claimed she’d had sexual relations with security officer Vasilios Hantzopoulos, 47.

The investigation allegedly revealed Hantzopoulos between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Aug. 13 approached the inmate in the courthouse detention area, where the two had sex.

Detectives obtained a warrant for Hantzopoulos’ arrest, and the security officer on Wednesday turned himself into to officers at Troop 2.

He was arrested and charged with having sexual relations in a detention facility and official misconduct.

Hantzopoulos was released on $2,000 unsecured bond.
