Delaware State Police arrested a man early Wednesday morning after he allegedly shot a man and threatened the victim’s 3-year-old son with a knife during a home invasion in Viola.
Troopers responded about 2:30 a.m. to a home on the 800 block of West Evens Road for a report of a man who had been shot by an intruder.
The 31-year-old male victim told police he heard banging on the residence’s back door, and found it had been forced open.
Police said the man was then confronted by acquaintance Tyree Bordley, 22, who was armed with a handgun and demanded jewelry and cash.
When the victim said he didn’t have anything, Bordley allegedly shot him once in the right leg.
Authorities said the two men struggled before the victim was able to grab the handgun and fire numerous rounds at Bordley, but did not hit him.
Bordley then ran to a rear bedroom, where a 31-year-old woman and her 3-year-old son were sleeping, according to police.
Bordley allegedly grabbed the woman and child, displayed what police described as “a large knife” and threatened to kill the two if the male victim didn’t give him his gun back.
Police said the man complied, and the woman and child were able to break free and run from the home.
Bordley also allegedly fled through the rear door in an unknown direction.
Emergency workers took the 31-year-old male victim to Christiana Medical Center, where he was treated for the non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The 31-year-old woman and her 3-year-old son were both taken to Kent General Hospital for minor abrasions sustained during the altercation.
Within 45 minutes of the shooting, officials with the Troop 3 Criminal Investigations Unit and the Governor’s Task Force found Bordley at his Felton home and took him into custody.
He was arraigned and charged with two counts of aggravated menacing and one count each of home invasion, first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal mischief, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
Bordley was on Wednesday jailed at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $274,100 secured bond.
