Delaware County M.E.: Baby died of ‘heroin intoxication’

The death of an 11-month-old boy in July has been ruled a homicide resulting from “acute heroin intoxication,” according to the Delaware County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Niccolo Varner, of Collingdale, died July 15 at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. Police responded to his family’s home and found medics performing CPR on the boy, the Delaware County Daily Times reported.

The official findings from Medical Examiner Frederic Hellman were reportedly filed this week. The autopsy was not available Thursday.

No charges have been filed in the case.

Authorities initially detained Varner’s mother, Christine Rivero, to investigate the alleged possession of drug paraphernalia and about her son’s death.
