There are a ton — 150, to be exact — of events happening across the city as part of DesignPhiladelphia. The 11-day celebration includes open studio tours, gallery openings, artist lectures, fashion shows and workshops. Where to start? We’re, naturally, going with a whiskey tasting.
Old City’s Hudson Beach Glass is inviting cocktail experts from Garces Restaurant Group to handle the booze, while co-owner Sean Gilvey will demonstrate how he fires out the perfect glass to drink it in.
In this case, perfection means a rocks glass from his textured “ridge bottom” series. But according to his wife and group co-owner Emily, a proper vessel is really in the hand of the holder. “We believe that a good whiskey glass just needs to be the right weight and size for the hand,” she says. “It needs to be something you like holding — if you like the glass in your hand, it’s a good whiskey glass.”
