Howie Roseman presented a look inside his draft roomto reporters Wednesday, when he addressed the media at the NFL combine in Indianapolis.
“Let’s notmiss on guys we have a third round grade on in the sixth round because there is a particular position that we need,”Roseman, the Eagle VP of player personnel said
“We are not going to take a position in the draft just because of need,” Roseman continued.”It has to do with having a young quarterback and building around him. What looks like a need today could change. We have to get the best player available.”
The Eagles have Carson Wentz and he’s the priority. That was made clear. And with the worst wide receiving core in football last season Philly seems to be intent on targeting weapons to help Wentz. But Roseman stresses that even though they are in need, they won’t make a stupid stretch.
“We are trying to build a complimentary roster that fits around our quarterback and what he’s comfortable with and our coaching staff,” Roseman said.
Head coach Doug Pederson, also in front of cameras for the first time since January also spouted the company line “we draft the best available.” And was enthusiastic on his desire to help Wentz improve with higher quality skill players.
“We are looking at every position,” the coach said.”We need better production out of that spot (wide receiver).Free agency starts in a week and you have the draft coming up, but I am a big believer that you have to build around your quarterback.”
The Eagles have seven picks this April including the 14th or 15th overall (pending a coin toss with the Colts later this week).
