Eagles nab Pro Bowler Smith

The Eagles agreed to terms on a one-year contract yesterday with former Giants wide receiver Steve Smith. The deal is reportedly worth $4 million, with $2 million guaranteed.

“It seemed like a great fit and that’s how it played out,” Smith said.

Smith is coming off microfracture surgery on his knee and was limited to just nine games last season. The 26-year-old is still rehabbing, but said he is “ahead of the curve.”

“If it were up to me, I’d want to practice tomorrow,” Smith said. “I’m pretty close. It could be Week 1 … you never know.”

According to league sources, the Smith signing has nothing to do with the mysterious illness that is keeping Jeremy Maclin off the practice field. The team still expects him back for Week 1.

“We feel very good about our current group of receivers and Steve adds another dimension to that position,” coach Andy Reid said. “He’s played very well against us in the past few years and we’re happy to have him on board.”
