Maybe DeSean Jackson needs that shiny, new contract sooner rather than later, so he can buy himself a new alarm clock.
The Eagles wide receiver reportedly missed a special teams meeting Saturday when his alarm clock didn’t go off and Jackson overslept. Apparently, it wasn’t the first time this has happened and a source told The Associated Press that this was the “final straw.” The Philadelphia Daily News was the first to report the incident.
As a result, coach Andy Reid benched Jackson and Jason Avant gets the start today. Jackson, of course, is unhappy about his contract, which pays him about $600,000 this season. Many, including Jackson, thought a new deal would have been completed by now, but that has not happened. His spokesman told the Daily News that he doesn’t want this to become a “T.O. situation.”
As expected, Evan Mathis (turf toe) and Nate Allen (concussion) were also inactive, with King Dunlap taking over at left guard and rookie Jaiquawn Jarrett at safety. Third-string quarterback Mike Kafka, rookie cornerback Curtis Marsh, tackle Winston Justice and defensive end Phillip Hunt are also inactive. Julian Vandervelde will dress for the first time in his pro career.
