Eagles Notebook: Juan Castillo fired

Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo has been fired, according to Andy Reid. Defensive backs coach Todd Bowles will take over for Castillo.

The head coach released a statement Tuesday morning announcing a move that many felt came a year-and-a-half too late. Castillo had been the Eagles offensive line coach two seasons ago, then was surprisingly promoted to defensive coordinator.

His unit has been prone to fourth-quarter collapses, like the one last Sunday against Detroit. The Eagles rank 16th in total defense (18th against the pass, 16th vs. the run). They have failed to generate a sack in three straight games.

“We’re six games into the season and average isn’t good enough. I know the potential of our team and insist on maximizing it,” Reid said in a statement.

Nnamdi Asomugha openly questioned Castillo’s decision to change defensive strategies after last week’s defeat, specifically switching up coverages on Calvin Johnson. The Eagles are off this week, but Reid will address the media Tuesday at noon.
