Eagles play tag with Vick, Akers

One was expected. The other? Not so much.

The Eagles tagged two players yesterday, placing the franchise tag on quarterback Michael Vick and the transition tag on kicker David Akers.

“Michael Vick and David Akers were two of our most valuable players last year,” coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “They were well deserving of their Pro Bowl berths and we’re happy to take this step to ensure that they’ll be back in Philadelphia next season.”

Vick would make the average salary of the top five players at his position, with the move keeping Vick off the open market.

Meanwhile, Akers will make the average salary of the top 10 players at his position, and the Eagles can match any offer given to Akers in free agency.

Of course, those salaries are based on the format of the current collective bargaining agreement, set to expire March 3. There may be no tags under a new CBA.
