After making headlines with their offense last week, the Eagles are shifting their focus to retaining and signing a solid defensive core. This began Monday when the team announced they had inked defensive lineman Cedric Thornton to a one-year pact.

The 25-year-old has only played two NFL seasons, making his re-signing almost a foregone conclusion prior to Monday. Following the 2014 season he will become a restricted free agent.

Thornton is a member of the Eagles’ very young front four. The seven defensive lineman under contract for Philadelphia average 24.6 years old. Along with Thornton, two other starting linemen will return in 2014, Bennie Logan and Fletcher Cox.

The one-time undrafted free agent battled from a spot on the practice squad to playing in all 16 games a year ago.

At 6-foot-4 and 309 pounds, Thornton recorded 78 tackles and a sack during the 2013 campaign.
