Farmers’ Market Opens at Frankford Transportation Center

Mayor
Michael Nutter, Sen.
Robert Casey, SEPTA Manager Joseph Casey and Deputy Mayor
Donald Schwarz were on hand this morning to celebrate the opening of a new farmers’ market at the
Frankford Transportation Center in Northeast Philadelphia.

“The Frankford Transportation
Farmers’ Market combines access to healthy options
with sustainable food systems, local economic growth and
transit-oriented development,” Nutter said.

The market is a collaborative effort
between the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, the Food Trust,
the Mayor’s Office of Transportation and Utilities and
SEPTA.

It is one of 25 farmers’ markets across the city that have opened under Get Healthy Philly,
a federally-funded initiative to combat obesity by making healthy choices more accessible to low-income residents.

These markets accept food stamp benefits through the Philly Food Bucks Program, which allows eligible shoppers to receive $2 worth of fruits and vegetables for every $5 of SNAP benefits spent at participating stores.

“The Frankford Farmers Market
represents an innovative way to promote Pennsylvania agriculture,
stimulate the local economy, create jobs and improve access to fresh,
healthy foods for the community,” Sen. Casey said.
“Through programs like
Get Healthy Philly we can continue Pennsylvania’s proud agriculture tradition to support jobs and health throughout the state.”
