Former police sergeant pleads guilty to insurance scam

Former Philadelphia Police Sergeant Dwayne Darby pleaded guilty to theft, perjury and criminal conspiracy todayfor helping to file a false car insurance claim. Hewas sentenced to three years probation and fined $5,000.

Darby was arrested after a seven-month grand jury investigation found that he was involved in the fake claim submitted for a 2006 Volvo registered to his boyfriend, Karriem Mangum. Mangum pleaded guilty to all charges on October 14, 2011.

Darby helpedMangum report the car stolen to collect money from Nationwide Insurance Company by saying that the two traveled to New York for a long weekend with friends and left the car parked on Robbins Avenue, then came back to find it gone.

Darby also admitted to lying to the grand jury.He had served as a sergeant in the 22nd District for 15 years before his dismissal in 2010.
