Feminist Flea Market

This weekend, House Cat’s Feminist Flea Market is back for an outdoor in-person event on Friday, Aug. 27 at Cherry Street Pier from 6 to 10 p.m. According to a release, there will be over 40 vendors at this weekend’s market selling everything you want and didn’t know you needed including handmade clothing and jewelry, live plants, candles, vintage accessories, homemade beauty products and much more. House Cat carefully curated the market to highlight the beautifully diverse identities and works of Philadelphia’s artists and businesses. As always, the market will be featuring artists who are marginalized for their gender, including women, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming folks, and makers who are Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) are prioritized.

The release also states that to shop at the market, there’s a $5 “entry fee”; and proceeds from this Friday at Cherry Street Pier will benefit Homies Helping Homies, a mutual aid initiative based in the Point Breeze section of South Philadelphia that’s focused on the distribution of free household essentials. The community raised over $13,000 for local mutual aid organizations during the last two virtual markets and Feminist Flea is hoping to hit or exceed that number this time.

Cinema in the Cemetery

This weekend, one popular event is back from the Friends of Laurel Hill & West Laurel Hill Cemeteries in partnership with the Philadelphia Film Society. Last go-around, moviegoers watched an outdoor film at West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, but the event this weekend now moves back to Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia on Aug. 28th at 8 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to pack a picnic, gather some friends or a date, and enjoy an evening under the stars to watch ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ featuring live musical accompaniment from the Not-So-Silent- Cinema as a special treat. General ticket prices are $20 but may vary depending on age and Friends membership. In case of inclement weather, rain dates are scheduled for the following day as well. Tickets can be purchased online.

Sunday Funday at Sor Ynéz: Hatha Yoga & Yogi Brunch

One of Philly’s newly opened restaurants is throwing it down this weekend. This Sunday, Sor Ynez will be hosting a new event dubbed the Hatha Yoga & Yogi Brunch on Aug. 29. Kicking off the event will be local yoga expert Heather Brock who will lead yoga sessions from 9 to 10 a.m., which will then be followed by a vegan Yogi Brunch from 10 to 11 a.m.

If you can’t make it this weekend, however, you’re in luck. Philly’s brand-new Mexican restaurant celebrating authentic and indigenous fare will be hosting the yoga and vegan-packed brunch on the last Sunday of every month throughout the fall as well. On the menu this week however is a Vegan Chickpea Scramble bowl, comprised of a mixture of veggies and chickpeas, topped off with Japanese seasoning, and peanut salsa macha. Tickets for Hatha Yoga and Yogi Brunch will be on sale for $30 per person on the Sor Ynez website.
