‘Get schooled’ at Plays and Players Theatre

A handful of former students will take to one of Philadelphia’s hottest stages next week for a look at the more comical side of the classroom, just in time for Back to School season.
On Monday, August 15 at 8:30PM—which is a school night—five of the city’s most renowned storytellers will grace the stage of Plays and Players Theatre in Rittenhouse Square for “Schooled—True Stories From The Classroom.” The show’s August edition will focus on “The Principal.” Area storyteller Geoff Jackson, who has graced comedy and storytelling stages around the city, will host the event with a tale or two of his own experiences from his alma mater.
“We’ve all been to school. We all endured gym class, worked on science projects, fell in and out of love, learned our times tables and the Quadratic equation and took that long walk to the principal’s office,” Jackson explained. “These are the stories that interest me. This is precisely the show I’ve wanted to do for many years and I’m so excited for people to see it.”
Joining Jackson throughout the evening will be fellow storytellers Joanna Doberstein, Neil Barchan, Matthew Schmid and Rachel Fogletto.
“I am really excited to do the show; I plan to tell a story from the only year of my life that I went to Catholic school,” Fogletto said about her upcoming performance. Fogletto is certainly no stranger to the stage, being a staple of both the city’s comedy and storytelling communities. Currently, she hosts the monthly South Philly comedy shows “Broad Humor!” (at Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar) and “Comedy for Gentlemen” (at the Republican Club).
“Schooled—True Stories From the Classroom” had its debut show in June and returned for another successful outing in July. The monthly show is part of Good Good Comedy, a year-round series of experimental comedy, improv, and storytelling shows that is the brainchild of longtime comedy community leaders Aaron Nevins and Kate Banford.
“Statistically speaking, 100% of people should have at least one story about school, so we’ve got a lot of good ones to choose from,” Nevins quipped.
Admission to “Schooled—True Stories from the Classroom” is $5 and tickets can be purchased ongoodgoodcomedy.com.
