Hot Plate: The Mocha Creme at Beiler’s Donuts

Hot Plate: The Mocha Creme at Beiler’s Donuts

Here’s the thing — I’m not a big donut person. I usually avoid sugar during the workday, and typically go for a plain croissant if I’m in the mood for a morning pastry. But after seeing everyone post their gorgeous photos of Beiler’s Donuts since the opening of the new University City store, I braved the morning sugar crash for a taste of heaven.

Beiler’s started over 30 years ago at Reading Terminal, and this new location at 3900 Chestnut Street is the brand’s only other Philly location. A full-fledged shop, there’s a coffee bar and plenty of seating in addition to the glass case of magical donuts.

The toughest part about the whole experience was choosing which one to feature, so I ended up buying a dozen for $10.99. Out of the ones that I tried, my absolute favorite was the Mocha Creme.

First, it’s beautiful to look at with swirls of vanilla and chocolate frosting on top of a layer of fluffy mocha cream. The donut itself had some weight to it because the inside was filled with creamy mocha goodness as well.

Upon first bite, I couldn’t believe how fresh and soft the dough was. The frosting and buttercream was sweet but not overpowering, adding razzle dazzle to a solid doughy foundation.

If you are looking for a life-changing pastry experience, make plans to check out the new Beiler’s shop in University City. Take a few moments out of your day to sit back, relax and say hello to donut nirvana. And before you run to one of those awful chain donut shops for your next office function, consider grabbing donuts from this sweet shop instead. Your coworkers will love you forever.
