It’s Time for the Reading Terminal Market Harvest Festival

It’s sad but true: we’re coming to the close of the farmer’s market season here in Philadelphia. Savvy shoppers know, though, that you can still get all the fresh ingredients you need for a fantastic meal year round at the Reading Terminal Market.

This Saturday marks the 10th annual Harvest Festival. From 10am to 4pm, the market will close Filbert St. to traffic and bring the farm to the city with hay bales, corn stalks and pumpkin patches. Visitors can ride an authentic farm tractor around the block, enjoy games and listen to live blue grass while munching on fresh Amish donuts (the best!), caramel apples and locally produced fruits and veggies. Top it off with a piping hot glass of apple cider for the perfect autumn afternoon.

Be sure to head inside to get your shopping on, too. The Fair Food Farmstand carries a multitude of goodies from pork to produce, all from small-scale local farms. Golden Fish Market features fresh seafood with seasonal specials. Grab all the seasonings you could ever need at the Spice Terminal. Check out the artisinal varieties of Downtown Cheese. Pick up a lovingly crafted loaf of bread from Metropolitan Bakery. Of course, you’ll want to grab a Famous 4th St. Cookie too. And because all that shopping works up an appetite, sit down and sample the cuisine of the market’s many restaurants, which range from Chinese to chitlins, diner to deli, sushi to souvlaki. It’s foodie paradise right here in Philadelphia.
