Various sources familiar with the Eagles and across the NFL do not expect the Birds to put the franchise tag on Sam Bradford this week. The tag became an option Tuesday and would cost Philly around $20 million to keep the quarterback’s services for one season.

Whether they are looking to sign him long term or move on is yet unknown, but a gamble on the open market could save Philly some serious money.

One key member of the Eagles community, former Birds’ quarterback Ron Jaworski went on the record earlier this week giving his endorsement to Bradford.

“The question the Eagles need to ask is not necessarily the talent aspect of it, but is he the right guy for the future,” Jaworski said Monday via the Allentown Morning Call. “Is he a guy that can stay healthy for the future? Those are questions they have to answer.I think from a talent standpoint Sam is a fine NFL quarterback that can help any team that he’s with.”

Other options at quarterback that have emerged from journalists and NFL experts include Chase Daniels, the Chiefs back up who is familiar with new head coach Doug Pederson and Broncos QB Brock Osweiler, who many think is Peyton Manning’s heir apparent in Denver.

The pricetag for both would likely be just as high, if not higher than Bradford.

In other Eagles-related franchise tag news,ESPN’s Adam Schefter is saying that theRedskins and quarterback Kirk Cousins have “broken off” negotiations about a new contract. This could lead to the QB being tagged, or to him hitting the free agent market.

The latter is an interesting possibility for the Eagles, who witnessed Cousins’ improvement to an explosive signal-caller first hand as he torched them for 655 yards and five touchdowns (with no interceptions) in Washington’s two wins over Philly in 2015.
