Local boy thankful to be home

A number of Bobby Convey jerseys were mixed in with the 17,000-plus fans cheering for the hometown Union last weekend at PPL Park.

About 60 fans attended the game to specifically support Convey, a midfielder for the San Jose Earthquakes.

Convey attended Penn Charter High and was the 1998 Philadelphia high school player of the year as a freshman.

“I live 20 minutes from the stadium,” said Convey, who played in his first MLS game in this area last Saturday. “My family’s here. It’s exciting for me. I grew up here. To be able to play an MLS match in the city I grew up is very, very cool.”

Convey tallied an assist in a 2-1 win for his Earthquakes. The 27-year-old has six assists (no goals) in 14 games this season. But playing in front of the fans in Chester was an extra special memory.

“I won’t ever forget it,” Convey said.
