Man killed outside Wheels of Soul motorcycle club

A man was killed this morning during a double shooting outside the Wheels of Soul motorcycle club in West Philadelphia.

Gunfire erupted around 3:45 a.m. outside the club’s private headquarters at 61st and Market streets, striking two men, police said. One man, 28, was shot multiple times. He was taken by private car to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania by the time police arrived, but died shortly before 4 a.m.

Police located a second victim, 25, at Mercy Hospital with a gunshot wound to the face. He was transferred to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition.

That victim was sitting in a Dodge Charger when he was hit, police said.

Investigators have not yet announced a motive or made any arrests.

Wheels of Soul made headlines last summer when their West Philadelphia clubhouse was raided and alleged local member James “Animal” Smith was indicted by the FBI as part of a nationwide bust based on a two-year investigation into the outlaw biker gang.
