Police are investigating a fatal shooting at the Hamilton Township home of an off-duty corrections officer, who told investigators he was defending himself and his girlfriend from a home invasion.

The shooting happened just before 4 a.m. Saturday, when the officer, not publicly identified, told authorities he saw Dominic Neal wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood up and his head down, walking up the path to the home’s front door, according to WPVI.

The resident’s girlfriend, also in the home, reportedly had a domestic violence restraining order against Neal.

The officer told investigators he shouted at Neal to stop, but that the man instead reached for the front door with one hand while holding his waistband with the other.

Three or four shots were fired, with one hitting Neal in the head, according to the WPVI report.

As no charges have yet been filed, the name of the officer was not released.

Police continue to investigate.
