Mayor Nutter marks the opening of city pools

Mayor Nutter and city officials celebrated the opening of public pools on Monday at Awbury Recreation Center in East Mount Airy, marking the official start of summer vacation for thousands of young people.

With fairly cool temperatures, Nutter opted not to dive in this year in his lifeguard gear, but gave way to plenty of eager young swimmers. A heat warning will be in effect on Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures in the high 90s, so today’s opening was perfect timing.

All seventy public pools will be open this summer, Nutter said, and will not require private donations for the first time in four years. Contributions to the Summer Splash FUNd over the past three years enabled the city to provide enough money in the budget this year for staffing, according to Nutter.

Sorry, not this year, kids.
