Memorial for deadly fire unveiled

NORTHERN LIBERTIES – A ceremony will be held today to unveil permanent memorials honoring the 14 public safety workers who perished in the Dec. 21- 22, 1910 Friedlander Leather Remnants Factory Fire.

The 1910 fire on the 100 block of North Bodine Street was a tragedy that included the single largest loss of Philadelphia public safety civil servants in history — 13 firefighters and one police officer.

The loss left 11 widows and 21 children fatherless. More than 45 firefighters and police officers were injured that day as well.
