Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard, the final two remaining players from the Phillies’ glory days (and 2008 World Series team) have each passed through the MLB’s waiver system.

This means each is clear to be tradedwithout obstacleprior to the August 31 deadline.

Howard, who has had a mediocreseason despite a recent hot streak, is all but assured to complete the year in Philly and be bought out by the team.

Ruiz however, is known as a stellar pitchers’ catcher and has had a respectable season at age 37, hitting .261 in 191 plate appearances with just 28 strikeouts. According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, two teams are “mulling” making a move for the veteran catcher.

Ruiz is in the midst of a $8.5 million contract year, with a $500,000 buy out or $4.5 million club option next season.
