Mohan Varughese: PSU student murdered near Temple

A Penn State University student was shot and killed in North Philadelphia Monday evening during an attempted robbery.

Mohan Varughese, 23, of Bustleton, was visiting his girlfriend, a Temple University student, at her house on the 2200 block of Camac Street near the school’s main campus when a man demanded he hand over the keys to his motorcycle shortly after 5 p.m. Varughese resisted and the man shot him three times in the face and chest. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he died 45 minutes later.

A Facebook group memorializing the young man already had over more than 150 members by noon yesterday. “Mohan was an angel on earth and will continue to be an angel in heaven,” said friend and Temple student Jimmy Kuda. “He had a passion for riding motorcycles that is unexplainable. He is a role model for our Indian youth and set the standards for success among us.”

Mohan was to graduate from Penn State this week.
