A Lower Gwynedd man yesterday answered to charges of abandoning his 16-year-old daughter because she received a bad grade in calculus class, according to Montgomerynews.com.
Tuan Huynh, 47, pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child under the age of 18 and was sentenced to two years of probation and 100 hours of community service. He is also barred from living in the family home until he completes parenting classes.
Prosecutors, who reportedly described Huynh’s daughter as a soft-spoken and serious young girl who hopes to become a classical pianist, said that after an argument over math grades on Feb. 22, Huynh told the 16-year-old she could no longer live with the family and gave her one hour to pack.
He then dropped her off near the Cheltenham Square Mall over 13 miles away. She was carrying only a backpack containing a blanket and a change of clothes and had no family in the area, nor a cell phone to call for help, authorities said.
Cheltenham police were alerted to the incident around 3:30 p.m. that day after the girl ran into a minister, who called authorities to report that a child was asking strangers for a place to stay. She initially gave police a false name, later telling them she was instructed to do so. Authorities were able to identify her through music books in her bag that had her name inside, according to the report.
