The clock is ticking with the trade deadline looming at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, but the Eagles know they need some firepower if they want to hang on in a supercompetitive NFC East.
Rumors have swirled about the Eagles being linked to 49ers wide receiver Torrey Smith and Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery over the last week, but Doug Pederson has denied that a deal for either is in the works. Pederson doesn’t make those decisions, Howie Roseman does, and Roseman has shown to be aggressive and creative — formalizing the most trades of any GM in football over the last handfull of seasons (highlighted by almost half a dozen offseason trades, sending Sam Bradford to Minnesota among other blockbuster moves). A team looking to be at the end of its rope this season — the Jets — could be interested in selling before the deadline and one of their most pliable assets is wideout Brandon Marshall, who wasa fantastic piece of last season’s rejuvenated offense. New York is all but out of the AFC East race and Marshall has a favorable contract for a bidder — he can be under team control for $7.5 million in 2017. That no doubt makes him an attractive add to the Eagles, if the price is right.
MMQB’sAlbert Breerhas mentioned Marshall as a movable piece and the Jets as possible sellers and has talked to several NFL sources.
Just what the price is, or if the two teams can get a deal made over the next two days, is yet to be seen. But the Eagles’ lacking wide receiving corps (ranked 29th of 32 teams in receptions heading into Week 8) could use the boost. Marshall, 33, had 102 catches for 1,502 yards and 14 touchdowns — his eighth 1,000-yard NFL season.
