Officers make second arrest in Olney police-involved shooting

Police have made at least one arrest in connection with a police-involved shooting in Olney early this morning.

Lt. Ray Evers said that SWAT responded to a home at Devereaux Street and Torresdale Avenue in Wissinoming around 9:30 a.m. for a barricade situation and at least one person was taken into custody.

“That job, there are a lot of tentacles to it, things that are going on that are a piece of the puzzle with that investigation,”Evers said. “Obviously, we have multiple combatants and a lot going on. We need to see who was shooting or not shooting, why they were shooting and piece that together.”

The violence first touched off around 1 a.m. at 2nd Street and Nedro Avenue in Olney, where patrol officers circled the block outside a large gathering, reportedly a baby shower.

The officers saw an Asian man, identified by police as Banna Sok, 23, shooting at a fleeing red SUV, whose occupant was returning fire, Evers said. The officers, who were in a marked car, got out and told Sok to drop his weapon. He instead allegedly pointed it at one of the patrolmen.

“There were a lot of people out there,” Evers said. “Basically, the cops got
into a gunfight.” One of the officers shot at Sok once, striking him in the head. He was rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center in critical condition. Investigators recovered a Glock 17 on the scene.

Evers said ballistics evidence from the scene found that, of the numerous shell casings, many were from Sook’s gun and only one matched the weapon fired by police. Several people at the crowded scene were taken to the Homicide Unit for questioning.

Evers said this morning’s barricade and arrest was connected to the initial incident, but declined to elaborate how.”Right now, we’ve got to see if that man was shooting at the SUV, whom the person or people are that were occupying and driving that SUV – the investigation is very fluid,” he said. “The barricade was for the safety of officers. It was a person we were looking for because there was prior gunfire with the SUV and the male so we know the people we’re dealing with had guns and we’re not going to go in there.”

The investigation is ongoing.
