Reactions to Osama bin Laden’s death at the hands of U.S. Navy SEALs have ranged from jubilation to skepticism, but none have been as entertaining as those expressed online.
There was a massive spike in Internet traffic around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night as President Barack Obama delivered the news of bin Laden’s death. Twitter logged 4,000 tweets per second.
“They buried Osama at sea next to the U.S.’s other greatest villain, Megatron,” chevyryda_banks tweeted yesterday afternoon. “That’s what Osama gets for forwarding his subscription to Cat Fancy to his new address,” seanphila followed.
Mere hours after Obama’s announcement, there were at least three bin Laden death-themed Android apps, including “Osama is DEAD! Whack Osama,” created by KaptainKrunkz Developments.
A search of YouTube for “Osama death” turned up over 8,700 results, including a Taiwanese CGI re-enactment from New Media Animation that featured a video game-style assassination in slow motion followed by Osama joining Saddam Hussein and Adolf Hitler in hell.
Online T-shirt retailers also joined on the lucrative game. British-based Cafe Press peddled a shirt reading, “Sorry it took so long to get you a copy of my birth certificate. I was too busy killing Osama bin Laden,” while New York company Its T-Shirt Time went with the simpler “Finally,” scrawled under a picture of the terrorist leader.
