A Philadelphia man was killed Sunday night after being struck by a car as he ran across U.S. Route 13 north of 1st Avenue in New Castle, Del., according to police.
Investigators said the man, 33, shortly after 10:20 p.m. ran from the roadway’s median across the southbound lanes and toward the eastern shoulder.
In the process, the victim ran into the path of a 2004 Lexus 330 driving south in the left middle lane.
Police said the car’s driver, Clifton Crawford, 47, swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian, but struck him with the front of his vehicle.
The pedestrian, identified Monday as Jason Richetti, 33, of Philadelphia, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Crawford, who police said was properly restrained, suffered a minor injury and did not require immediate medical treatment.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit was on Monday continuing to investigate the incident.
Troopers in a release reminded pedestrians to use caution when walking near roadways, to wear reflective materials and to use appropriate crosswalks.
