The suspect who threw an aluminum beer bottle onto the field at Ryan Howard earlier this month has been identified.
Sidney Smith, 21, of Wilmington, Del., turned himself in to police on Friday, Philadelphia Police said. He was citedfor disorderly conduct and was released.
The incident happened at the end of the Phillies’ game against the Milwaukee Brewers, which the city lost, 6-3. Howard was walking back toward the dugout after grounding out. Smith hurled the Bud Light Lime bottle in Howard’s direction, but didn’t strike the player. He then left without being stopped or ejected by Phillies security.
Philadelphia’s sports teams aren’tknown for having the most peaceable fans. Sports Illustrated ranked Eagles’ fans the worst in the NFL last year. Still, Phillies’ managerPete Mackanin says it’s not all fans.
“I wouldn’t group the fans together,” Mackanin said after the bottle incident. “There’s always a bad apple in the bunch and that’s all it takes. One person who does something like that. They like to win, they’re fanatical. They know their baseball … I’m not going to put that on the Phillies fans because of one bad apple.”
