Phillies bring back Romero

Ruben Amaro Jr. keeps reaching into his wallet.

The Phillies GM signed left-handed reliever J.C. Romero to a one-year deal Thursday worth $1.35 million, the team announced.

The 34-year-old went 1-0 with three saves and a 3.68 ERA in 60 appearances last season for the Phillies. Romero held left-handed hitters to a .217 average.

Romero was originally signed by the Phillies in June of 2007. He pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings, with seven strikeouts, during the team’s 2008 World Series run. After the season, Romero was suspended 50 games for breaking the league’s substance abuse policy. He has battled a myriad of injuries since.
