Philly cop accused of shooting son in dispute over car

A 25-year veteran of the Philadelphia police force faces a charge of attempted murder accusing him of shooting his adult son in the back in September during an argument over use of the family car, authorities announced Tuesday.

Dorion Young, 46, also faces counts of assault and reckless endangerment in connection with the Labor Day shooting in his home on the 2700 block of Taunton Street.

One of the shots glanced off Young’s shoe but he was not injured, authorities said.

Young has been suspended for 30 days and may soon be fired,Philadelphia District Attorney R. Seth Williams said during a news conference.

There was no available Information about whether Young had obtained an attorney who could comment on the charges in his behalf.

Young was in his home with his two sons and his oldest son’s girlfriend on the day of the incident, the district attorney said. The off-duty officer quarreled with his oldest son because he felt the younger man had been disrespectful, according to the charges. Young allegedly pulled from his pocket a loaded .40-caliber pistol. The gun was his personal firearm, not his service weapon.

“You my son and you aren’t going to keep disrespecting me,” he allegedly yelled as he waved the gun in the air, according to the DA’s news release. Young called the police, then broke down a door to confront his son, who had retreated to another room. He fought with his son, who was again retreating, when Young fired the two shots, prosecutors said. Young was apparently on the floor at the time, sitting up with his legs outstretched.

Young’s son was taken to a local hospital. Information about his condition wasn’t available.

“If you are a Philadelphia police officer, elected official or private citizen; you cannot use your gun to try to end an argument,” Williams said in the news release.
