A Philadelphia police officer has been charged with stealing debit and credit cards from individuals in police custody and buying personal items.
Charles Jacoby, an officer in the 22nd District, allegedly took the cards from temporary storage while defendants were locked up. He then went to a Wawa convenience store in Philadelphia and used the cards to buy gas for his personal car or other items before shredding the cards, federal prosecutors claim.
Jacoby told investigators he targeted individuals who acted rowdy or disruptive, according to the information filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. An information generally indicates a defendant has cooperated with the government and plans to plead guilty.
Jacoby is formally charged with wire fraud. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
