PHOTOS: City Council honors World Light Welterweight Champion Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia

City Council on Thursday honored Ring Magazine World Light Welterweight champion, Juniata native Danny “Swift” Garcia. “Danny now is not just a representative of Juniata or the 7th Councilmanic District,” said Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez, who introduced the resolution. “He is a representative of Philadelphia and an ambassador throughout the world.”

Garcia defended his title in an October rematch against Mexican legend Erik Morales. “It’s just the way we breed our people,” Garcia said when accepting his award. “Philadelphia’s got tough people, blue collar people. That’s what I represent when I step in the ring. I represent hard work, I represent kids from the ghetto.”

“Now they can have a role model and look up to me. I’m going to keep working hard to keep that championship in Philly for a long time.”
