PHOTOS: Visiting the madhouse that is the new flagship Wawa

The much ballyhooed Wawa at Broad and Walnut streets opened today. In a bit of refreshing candor, the Philly mainstay admitted it wanted to open ahead of time in anticipation of the pope’s visit. So, it’s not just those people on Craigslist trying to make a buck off the holy father.

This morning, a band with a trombone player and local dignitaries were on hand to celebrate the new flagship location. Mayor Nutter was even there and said that Pope Francis ought to have the Wawa hoagie of his choice when he comes to the city.

So, City Paper’s staff, and CP intern Isabella Abiuso, felt obligated to take a leisurely jaunt down there and report back what they saw – and, in some cases, felt.

All the flavored coffee urns were kicked when your correspondents arrived on the scene. There was much gnashing of teeth and lamentation, and people waiting in line begged for mercy from a seemingly vengeful god. They received none.
