Polanco saves day for slumping Phils

The Phillies broke a four-game losing streak, with some late heroics from their struggling offense.

Placido Polanco homered to lead off the 11th inning on Thursday and the Phillies beat the Cardinals, 2-0.

The third baseman batted lead-off for the second straight game, with Jimmy Rollins moving to sixth.

Cole Hamels was stellar again, allowing just one hit in eight shutout innings. Chad Durbin (2-1) got the win as four relievers preserved the one-hitter. Brad Lidge recorded his eighth save in 11 chances.

The Phillies notched 12 hits, but couldn’t cross the plate until the top of the 11th when Polanco went yard.

Jayson Werth’s RBI double plated Raul Ibanez for the second run. Ryan Howard went 3-for-5, upping his career average in St. Louis to .388.
