Police Looking for Society Hill choker (VIDEO)

Philadelphia police said today that there may be a link between five strong-arm robberies of women in Society Hill since last month.

The string of attacks began June 25 on South Fourth Street between Delancey and Cypress. In each attack, the suspect has approached the woman from behind, grabbed them and taken their belongings. In three of the attacks, the victims were choked until they lost consciousness.

One of the victims describer her attacker as a black male in his 30s, muscular build, approximately 6 foot. Police said the description matches that of a man captured on a private surveillance camera going through a woman’s purse. Police have deemed the man a person of interest.

Police said the attacks have happened at various times of the day, and no sexual assaults have been reported. The victims range in age from 25 to 73. Authorities are also cautioning women to be on the lookout.

“Beware of your surroundings, try not to travel alone,” said Capt. Brian Korn of the Sixth District. Pedestrians are also urged to cross the street if they think someone is approaching them.

Anyone with information is asked to call Central Detectives at 215-686-3093 or 3094.
