Mattei Family Pizza in Point Breeze (1260 Point Breeze Ave.) has a specialty pie each month and for October, I got to try their Oktoberfest pizza ahead of its launch.
It comes with real pumpkin, pancetta and gorgonzola on top of a perfectly charred Italian-style pizza.
“My cousin came to visit from Italy and said you have to try a pumpkin, pancetta and gorgonzola pizza from here,” he says. “What you tasted tonight is the third rendition. I really like to tweak the recipes to make sure they’re good.”
At first you wouldn’t think that pumpkin on pizza could work, but these three ingredients produce a flavor explosion. The pancetta adds amazing texture to the softness of the pumpkin which ends up being more hearty than sweet. It may be the best thing I’ve ever tasted — the ultimate fall indulgence.
Who needs pumpkin-flavored coffees when there’s pizza with real pumpkin available?
The Oktoberfest pie will be available at Mattei Family Pizza beginning Oct. 1.
