Report: Tony Romo could retire, take over for Phil Simms at CBS

Tony Romo is still a Dallas Cowboy, but there is pretty much no chance he’ll be one when the 2017 NFL season starts.

Rumors have placed Romo as both a free agent and as a trade piece being sent to the Broncos or the Texans, but nothing has changed in more than a year for Dak Prescott’s Dallas backup.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, in what he tweeted as a “tidbit,” “CBS is eyeing him as a potential replacement for Phil Simms in the booth. A big-time opportunity looms.”

Phil Simms is both loved and hated as a broadcaster for the AFC’s television network CBS, and Romo would likely emerge as a just as divisive figure. The 62-year-old former quarterback works with Jim Nantz as CBS’s top broadcasting duo.

Romo could probably get more money from CBS than he could from an NFL team, but the 36-year-old might still have some football left to play. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones set a deadline of training camp for figuring out the Romo situation.

Rapoport has reported that Fox also has an interest in Romo.
