Reports: Kiko Alonso, Byron Maxwell heading to Dolphins in blockbuster trade

The Eagles own the month of March.

A year after Philadelphia completely owned the NFL offseason news cycle by trading LeSean McCoy, Nick Foles and signing DeMarco Murray, while cutting ties with others (Jeremy Maclin, Todd Herremans), it was Howie Roseman, not Chip Kelly making headlines in March again.

According to several sources, including NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Eagles agreed to trade cornerback Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso to the Dolphins in exchange for draft picks and a monumental amount of salary reliefMonday afternoon.

The Eagles are expected to receivea second-day pick (second or third rounder) in the deal as the Fins take over all of, or a large portion of the $8.5 million guaranteed to Maxwell this season.

Maxwell’s contract makes it conceivable that he could be dropped without much consequence in 2017.

Alonso carries a rookie-minimum contract and will be a free agent after next season. Both Maxwell and Alonso were acquired by Chip Kelly last March.

According to NFL reports, both players have already been informed that they have been traded and the deal will go through pending the passage of a physical by Alonso, who missed a handful of games last season in Philly. The deal takes place ahead of the Wednesday start of free agency.
