When Spruce Street Harbor Park reopens this May, it’s going to have a new attraction: a roller skating rink.

Touted as Philly’s first outdoor roller skating rink, the waterfront attraction will be known as Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DWRC) revealed Thursday.

Unlike normal rinks, this skating rink will boast an island in the center with shade and seats for visitors. Roller-blades and regular skates will be available for rental.

“The Waterfront is now one of the many reasons why Philadelphia is one of the most toured and visited cities in America,” Mayor Michael Nutter said in a statement.

The rink and Spruce Street Harbor Park will open with all their offerings from May 22 to September.

“We believe the development of the waterfront is fast reaching a tipping point. You can see it in the way people are using the new parks that DRWC has designed and built,” said DWRC president Tom Corcoran.”We are not quite there yet, but Philadelphia’s long cherished dream of having a world class waterfront on the Delaware River is moving closer to reality.”
