Two men were killed and seven people were injured in shootings Wednesday night into Thursday morning in Philadelphia.
In Southwest Philly, one man died and two others were taken to the hospital after shots rang out at around 7:45 p.m. at 61st Street and Buist Avenue, police said.
Nagir Smith, 26, of Elmwood, suffered gunshot wounds to his side and left arm, and he died at the hospital. A 22-year-old man was also shot in the leg, and a 30-year-old man was shot three times in the buttocks, police said. Both are in stable condition.
Just after 5 p.m., Tahmir Redding, 25, was shot in the head on the 3300 block of N. Bouvier Street in Tioga, around the corner from where he lived, authorities said. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died about 15 minutes later.
No arrests have been made in either killing.
It’s been a particularly violent week in the city. The homicide rate, which had been up about 15 percent compared to 2019, has jumped to 24 percent above last year’s level.
Seven people were killed in less than 24 hours Sunday and early Monday morning, one of Philadelphia’s most violent days in recent years.
Then, Monday evening, 30-year-old Terrell Washington was shot and killed while in the lobby of a building on 63rd Street in Overbrook. On Tuesday, a 21-year-old man was gunned down at 17th Street and Glenwood Avenue in North Philly, and officers found a man in his mid-30s dead with a gunshot wound to his chest inside a Frankford rooming house.
At around midnight Thursday, police responded to the 5000 block of Parrish Street where a 54-year-old man had been shot in his abdomen, right thigh, lower back, hip, right shin and right thumb. He is in stable condition, authorities said.
A few minutes later, a 30-year-old man showed up to Albert Einstein Medical Center after being shot eight times in a separate incident on the 200 block of E. Ashmead Street in East Germantown.
Investigators found nine 45-caliber shell casings at the scene and blood on the sidewalk. The victim is listed in stable condition.
Police said a 28-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday inside an apartment on the 200 block of N. 52nd Street in West Philly. She was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Officers recovered a weapon but have not made any arrests.
In addition, a 38-year-old man was shot once in the right ankle just after 4 p.m. Wednesday on the 3200 block of 76th Street in Southwest Philly, police said.
