South Jersey firefighter charged with theft from union

A Margate, New Jersey firefighter was charged Tuesday with stealing more than $75,000 from his union.

Michael C. Palmer, 36, a lieutenant in the City of Margate Fire Department could spend up to ten years in jail if convicted in the case, proscuetors said in a statement.
Investigators were tipped off to irregularities in the Margate chapter of the Fireman’s Mutual Benevolent Association’s bank account in 2014.
Palmer, who served as secretary and treasurer of the union was suspended from his job as a firefighter during the investigation.
Prosecutors allege Palmer used the money to pay for personal expenses.
