Supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal say the former death row inmate is in an intensive care unit in Schuykill Medical Center.

Prison officials would not confirm the report saying they do not discuss inmate medical treatment. A representative of the hospital did not return a call and email for comment.

Noelle Hanrahan, of Prison Radio, which distributes Abu-Jamal’s recordings, sent an email Monday afternoon saying that the prisoner was transported from SCI-Mahonoy at 1 p.m. She urged supporters to contact prison officials and allow Abu-Jamal’s family to visit him.

Abu-Jamal, a former public radio reporter and activist was sentenced to death in 1982 for killing police officer Daniel Faulkner in a trial that advocates say was unfair.

His sentence was commuted to life without parole in 2011. He is well-known for his writings on the U.S. justice system.
